I want to address your reactions to people having headcanons that Link is not a cisgendered boy. For the most part, what you said is irrelevant and your behavior is childish. You have little evidence to back your claims. I understand that you’re very upset, but you just don’t realize how ignorant you are, do you? And as a transgender person, I’m deeply offended by your actions.
I’d like to start off by saying that Link, as a fictional character, cannot express a gender identity. You claimed that those headcanons could not be valid because the text in the games uses ‘he’ pronouns and refers to Link as a boy, and you also said that “I thought y'all were against misgendering people”. What you don’t understand is that just because Link is called “he”, does not mean that Link is a cisgendered boy. Pronouns do not in any case dictate gender. The only thing that dictates gender is personal identity, which Link cannot express because he is not real, therefore it is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to misgender him. Additionally, just because the game calls him a boy does not mean that he is a boy. A person’s gender is their gender regardless of what people call them. If a trans boy is called a girl, does that mean that he is not a boy? No. If that person identifies as a boy, they are a boy regardless of pronouns, biological sex, how they look, or how they dress. My point is –and I can’t stress this enough– that because Link is a fictional character and cannot express a gender identity, it is impossible to determine his gender, and therefore can’t misgender him. We could interpret it any way we want. Link has no canon gender unless Shigeru Miyamoto actually announces “Link identifies as _____(gender).”
Now, I’d like to address what you thought of the people who you claimed had these sorts of headcanons. You implied that to agree with these headcanons, a person would identify as something along the lines of “autisgender otherkin supercalifragilisticexpialidociousexual.” It was very clear that you felt animosity for these people, saying that they treated genders and sexualities like accessories, which made you feel like your gender and sexuality were not being taken seriously. That’s a very reasonable thing to be upset about, but are you 100% sure that the people who have simple headcanons are the same people who were treating identities as accessories?
For most of the people that have these headcanons, they have these headcanons because they themselves are transgender, non-binary, or agender and they want to be able to connect with the character more. You, as a cisgendered person and a person who is not in any way part of the lgbt community, just don’t understand how marginalized and shoved-under-the-carpet people like us are. Not only do people legitimately think that our gender identities are fake, people like us are literally killed for them. Even within the lgbt community, our supposed place of safety and solidarity, we are ignored. So if we have just one chance at being represented, and that chance is a headcanon, don’t you think we’d take that chance?
Now, about the people who you said were treating identities as accessories. That makes me upset too. Not only are those people incredibly stupid, immature, homophobic, and transphobic, those people are all cisgendered and heterosexual. How do I know? It’s because they don’t actually know what it’s like to have their identities mocked, and that’s why they do it. They aren’t even aware of the fact that they’re stupid and offensive. They’re like children; they simply do not know any better.
And speaking of children, I’d like to close this by addressing your extreme immaturity. Do you really think that you’re going to be attacked for being cisgendered and heterosexual? Do you know that you are part of the majority? Do you know that you have privileges, and those privileges came from centuries of the systematic oppression and dehumanization of people like me? You are never going to be attacked for being cisgendered and heterosexual in real life. Because you have the privilege of having your sexuality and gender assumed to be the “default” for people, what is “good and natural” for people. You did not have to come out. You will not be persecuted. If you tell a stranger that you are cisgendered and heterosexual, you will not receive the same disgusted, angry, fearful reaction that I get when I tell people that I am transgender and asexual. But you’re just so unaware, aren’t you?
Grow the fuck up. You’re 23 years old, you’re working on getting a degree, and you have a job. If you’re fearing for your mental health because you’re afraid that some teeanger on tumblr is going to call you a cishet, rethink your priorities. Lastly, if you are legitimately offended by the fact that people imagine Link as being transgender, you might want to consider that maybe you have a problem (like, I dunno, transphobia??)
PS. If you’ve read this and feel like replying, don’t you dare pull the autism card. I was diagnosed with autism at 11 years old and I still see multiple therapists for treatment. And clearly, I’m capable of not using my autism as an excuse to be homophobic and transphobic.
