I swear 90% of today’s artists are shy anxious nervous wrecks such as myself and I demand to know why
art is seen as unnecessary and irrelevant and we are seen as people who waste time with trivial things that do not contribute to the extensive machine that is society
Isn’t it bitterly ironic that art is what all past civilizations, great and small, are remembered by?
Artistic craft is also enshrined by many as something that should be undertaken without compensation, for the “purity of true expression”, and those who seek compensation for their skills (you know, so they can survive to make more art) are branded as “sellouts.”
Art as a sociocultural community is also dominated by classism, stratification and gatekeeping: the works of the disenfranchised and marginalized are viewed as curiosities at best, if they are viewed at all. High art remains the playground of the ultrarich, who curate and collect for the purposes of playing expensive games of “who’s trendier than who.”
The spread of “amateur” art, particularly fanart, as facilitated by social technology, is mocked and discredited as derivative hackwork or immature indulgence, and fledgling artists, some as young as preteens, face a scathing trial ground of anonymous spectators ready to tear their initial works to pieces for fun.
