“He did what he was told!”

Weirdly enough in all the hype about this episode I thought this was the most emotional scene, at least from a character development perspective. I mentioned to issom-har after I watched the previous episode that I found Peridot’s fear of anything that might be considered a ‘weapon’ to be telling, because she was always flinching back from anything that she perceived might hurt her, like she did it reflexively from experience. Now in this episode she tries to protect Steven from the Crystal Gems by saying ‘He did what he was told’; or ‘I was the one giving the orders, don’t punish him’.

I really like the characterization in this show. Somehow this scene seems like it told me 10 different things about the character without actually having to tell or show me anything.

So you’re saying that she’s been reprimanded so many times in the past, or she’s seen Gems reprimanded, that she assumes that “You’re in trouble” means “You’re going to be beaten up” or “You’re going to be crushed and maybe when you reform you’ll do better”, and she doesn’t want that to happen to Steven, so she steps forward to take it herself?

Why do people hurt me like this.
