And by “the Zelgan fic” I mean the one I’m writing.
I’m going to talk about race. It’s going to get heavy.
To be perfectly honest, and at the risk of sounding pretentious and elitist, if there is any Zelgan fiction writer that does not take–with the utmost of seriousness–these themes into consideration and critical importance as part of their dynamic, I just flat out don’t like what they produce.
I don’t care how small the ship is. There’s always gonna be depictions of it I’ll never read, or found too shallow or unbelievably fluffy. And I’m pretty chill about that in most cases, but when the issue of Orientalism–and weirdly enough, also occidentalism given canon was built on a Japanese viewpoint–and racial segregation, or even cultural tension, are whitewashed with ‘good vs evil’, I’m fucking OUT.
Shit, ask me again why I hate the introduction of Demise. I’ll rant about that for hours.
All of this, and the expression of it in what an author brings to the table on both Zelgan and in the characterization of Ganondorf and Hyrule itself–just to show their thoughts on it even, or show that it is recognised and needs recognition within the canon narrative–is effectively why I ship it in the first place. And also why I get so frightfully pissed off with people who dismiss Ganondorf’s value and importance as a character besides Link and Zelda (who are such precious fucking cinnamon rolls oh YES) and spout crap like ‘Can we get a new villain already, Ganondorf is boring’.
Never forget that the villain of a pseudo-European and extremely religious white monarchical country (whose heroes are as Aryan as elves get), when given human form as an upgrade from a PIG, was forged almost entirely on the Japanese importation of Arabian Nights and a haphazard smattering of other orientalist stereotyping on Egyptian, Mongolian, and even Spanish culture.
Cause it’s fucking important.
