Heeeere we go, I had an idea for quite some time :3
Loliness always pervaded the hour of twilight. Link gazed upon the horizon as the sun was setting. Midna said that twilight held serene beauty. He understood what she meant now. It was the sunset when he missed her the most. Months passed since their farewell.
He pressed his head against the tree. It was gettting colder. The summer was nearing it’s end. It was the harvest time. Just a year ago he would work in the field, but he hasn’t been to Ordon since the end of his quest. He didn’t feel like he belonged there anymore. He broke Ilia’s heart he knew and only hoped she would move on.
A horseman appeared in the distance, cutting Link’s trail of thoughts. He put his hand on the sword just in case as the figure approached. The sun was behind them so he couldn’t recognise the person. The rider stopped few meters away from Link and lead the beautiful white stallion by the rein. And then he recognised her.
She looked completely different in riding clothes. Leggins, leather jerkin, boots and purple riding coat, so different than her usual dresses, yet she still had elegant air around her. Link’s heart skipped a bit.
The young woman stopped in front of him and pulled down her hood.
“Link” she addressed him.
He kneeled down.
“My queen”
Zelda extended her hand. “Please, there is no need for that” she said pulling him up. “I’ve been looking for you.”
“It’s dangerous to be here, my lady. I’ll escort you back to the castle.”
“If it’s dangerous, why are you here alone?”
“I can fend for myself, you know that”
“So do I” the young queen raised her coat to reveal a rapier at her side. He smiled. They said she was quite a fencer. “I came to ask you to come back with me” she added in a seemingly calm voice.
Link was startled.
“Why?” he asked. “Your Majesty” he said, feeling ashamed for being so blunt with her. Remembering her position made him feel uneasy.
“I wish for you to become my knight. As a reward for everything you have done for us” Zelda replied, avoiding his eyes. “It’s a reqeust, not an order”.
“I can’t. I…there is something I need to do.” he replied sadly.
“You want to find a way back to Midna” she looked straight at him. There was a strange glow in her grey eyes.
He nodded.
“Link” she said softly. “There is no other way. I know you have hopes, but it’s only will bring you more pain. Please, come back with me”
“She loved you, you know. And she wished for you to be happy” Zelda said suddenly, her voice shaking “Before you ask, I didn’t need to become one with her to know that. A woman simply knows” she forced a smile and then he noticed it: she was crying. She turned her back at him, ashamed of herself. Link has never seen her lose her composure. She might have been a queen but she was still a young woman, overburdened with everything that happened.
Without thinking Link embraced her and pulled her into a hug. He heard her gasp but soon she relaxed and hid her face in the boy’s chest.
“Zelda” he said softly “what’s wrong?”
“I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”
the girl confessed quietly. He embraced her tighter, feeling a sudden rush of tenderness. He let Zelda cry, never letting her go. As she regained her composure, she gently pushed him away. Silently she came back to her steed and lit a lamp.
“If you choose to go with me, I will be very happy” she said almost calmly. “But I please do not think I let my feelings be know to influence your decision”.
She climbed on the horse, strong and proud as ever. Link felt a pang of pain in his heart. Zelda was a kind of girl who always kept emotions to herself, no matter if it was love or fear. And yet she opened up for him.
“Zelda” he called before she could escape. “I’ll go. I can’t yet promise you anything, but I’ll go.”
She nodded, pulling her hood up. She said enough. They rode side by side in the silence of the night.
