Okay, so in 3.5 Druids became capable of exchanging their prepared spells for summon nature’s ally spells on the fly, just like Clerics could spontaneously cast either cure or inflict spells on the fly.
Druids also got an animal companion. While at 1st level it’d usually be like an eagle or a wolf or something, at a high enough level you could pick up a bear.
You could also wild shape into a bear. Normally in bear form you couldn’t cast spells, but a single feat, Natural Spell, let you ignore that limitation. The duration of wild shape was so long that you could effectively be a bear for an entire day. A bear who can cast spells.
So now you’re a bear who has a bear friend who can summon more bears until you run out of spell slots.
(Okay, Infinite was a bit hyperbolic, because you’re still limited by your spell slots, but someone smarter than me can probably come up with a way to break that limitation as well.)
The coolest thing about this is that this only requires stuff from the core books.
