best picture was won by a film where the main character is mute and uses sign language. her two best friends are a closeted gay man and a black woman. it was directed by a mexican immigrant and y'all wanna focus on the fact that there was interspecies boning?
we can make our cake and eat it too. catch me ridin fish man dick while celebrating diversity and representation.
pitting these things against each other misses the point of the movie completely.
you think the diversity and the fish fucking combined were an accident? fishman is one of us. that’s….. the point.
he’s an outsider, considered not a person or worthy of basic respect. that’s why he’s relatable, that’s why eliza and the others connect as deeply with him as they do. they Get It.
fishman is an obvious allegory. for what? take your pick. but the beauty of the shape of water is that in 2018 it doesn’t have to be just an allegory any more.
we can have our metaphorical fish fucking cake and eat it too. the allegorical creature, yes, but also real live people from marginalized walks of life.
no need to cloak stories about queerness and diaspora and disability and courage in metaphor any more. not exclusively, anyway.
