Really feel like there’s a huge difference between being a fan of individual animes and being an “anime fan,” and that the tendency most people have to group together all Japanese animation, from Spirited Away to Naruto to Sword Art Online is dismissive of individual creators, studios, and of the entire country’s animation industry as a whole.

Seeing someone likes, say, Mob Psycho and Howls’ Moving Castle shouldn’t speak for their other interests. Like.

You wouldn’t hear someone’s a fan of The Little Mermaid and Gravity Falls and be like “oh great so they’re a South Park fan.”

I remember in HS doodling some Princess Mononoke fanart on my own time and my art teacher being like “oh great, anime” like it was a bad word and going on about how anime is a lesser form of art and that pursuing it is meaningless and uh. Not to put too fine a point on it, but dismissing Japan’s entire animation industry and an art style with a rich history and many incredible creators just because you had a student one time who wouldn’t stop drawing DBZ fanart during still lives is uh…….well it’s pretty fucked up isn’t it.

@angryjane yeah for sure and I think there is something to be said as far as being cautious when you meet someone who is clearly an Anime Fan TM because yes, we all know exactly the type of person we’re trying to avoid when we think of that, which is a weeaboo! I don’t even like jokingly referring to myself as a weeb, because I if a creepy fetishist has been called a weeaboo before, I don’t want them overhearing me and thinking “see hahaha it’s all just a big joke and the way I act is normal and acceptable!”

So yeah. Weeaboo = bad and you’re right about that.

Anime = a rich and diverse industry that shouldn’t be dismissed based on that girl in your graduate degree course who like, for real brought up hetalia in her thesis what the fuck
