nihilistkittens-blog asked: As long as you're on the subject of planeswalkers -- as a newer magic player, and a non-binary person, you have no idea how much I really appreciate this game's use of the singular they instead of he or she in rules text. However, this change often feels like a singular effort separated from the game's story, which (to my knowledge) has no enby characters, and certainly no major enby planeswalkers. Are there plans to fix that? Thanks~~ (huge fan of this game btw, I'm so glad I've gotten into it)

markrosewater:

Karn is a non-binary planeswalker.

Ashiok is a planeswalker whose gender is unknown and might be non-binary.

The Aetherborn is an entire non-binary race.

Ashiok is evil but not a monster that is any less humanlike. And the Aetherborn are tragic characters to the point that it’s actually offensive to label them as monsters.

They have a finite number of characters, and it’s a challenge to include every identity without it either feeling token or feeling like Magic is specifically “about” those identities. The real world lags in understanding these things, and WotC is in my opinion one of the best at adopting inclusive concepts and language, especially considering sex (the act, not gender) is practically nonexistent within the game.
