artistic talent and quality of work absolutely gets used to enable abusers in the industry and online art/fandom community. like this isn’t to say that being a skilled artist is synonymous with being a shitty person somehow but assholes who have had the time and freedom and resources to expand their skillset and improve their work clearly get away with shit that other people don’t
the art industry/education system is built to exploit people and a lot of professional artists internalize these messages and essentialize other people to their talent/skill and their value in networking. i’m a hobbyist and i’ve had the displeasure of meeting up-and-coming professionals who only befriended me for my work and who treated mutual friends like shit behind my back solely for not being as skilled in some niche visual mediums. i’ve met other writers/artists who outright admitted to me that they only befriended people who could create work for them. i guess this is what happens when all skills are forcibly monetized and no one has the gall to tell good artists off when they’re being shitty people idk 🤷🏻♀️
