In my defense my main knowledge of him is the return to ravnica trilogy where he’s insufferable and has the worst incel vibes. Is his characterization different in agents of artifice?
RTR trilogy was definitely his worst moments youre not wrong about him being annoying and incel vibes in the way he acts towards emmara. Agents of Artifice is way different though. AOA was the first book he was ever in and establishes a lot of the things that make Jace the way that he is. it came out in 2009, so it was his first origin story.
Agents of Artifice is about Jace having a huge struggle to keep his humanity and morals while he spirals into apathy and violence. so if jace acts a little fucked up in later stories, its because hes trying to remember how to be a decent person again and he’s not great at it. but he is trying his best.
a lot of people say Ixalan is Jace’s best writing ever, and i’ll say that’s true, but it really feels so much better to see Jace healing in Ixalan when you know the extent of how fucked up Jace was in AOA. if youre missing the AOA context it doesnt mean quite as much though its still nice to read.
That’s very interesting. I only read RTR because the original ravnica trilogy is one of the best I think, and was disappointed with all the “oh no my elf girlfriend broke up with me:(“ whining. I suspect he also gets a pretty bad rep from the fact he’s in game heavily associated with control players.
pretty much yeah. jace is a very complex character when you actually read all his stories, but most people havent.
honestly i would argue that rtr {from what i know of it; i have yet to read much of it and most of what i do know is ral being gay and amoral} is so out of character for jace regarding his views on emmara that i would go so far as to say its canonicity is dubious; aoa combined with his implicit adoption at the very end of absent minds establishes pretty clearly that she’s a mother figure to him if anything. there is absolutely zero interest or chemistry on either end especially because both of them are aware she has centuries of age and wisdom over him and the resulting power imbalance would be ruinous and glaringly obvious. they just Wouldn’t date and doug beyer is wrong. imo.

jace also had a crush on emmara in AOA, but she made it clear she was too old for him and didn’t feel that way about him at all. keep in mind tho that AOA (2009) and RTR (2012) were both written before Magic Origins (2015), so it actually had Not Yet been established that emmara basically adopted Jace, because that connection was made in Jace’s origins story.
