there’s this really popular idea in a lot of zelda fanfic that because link isnt royal like zelda that he’s uneducated or doesnt know how to read or something like that and i guess it was acceptable in like the tp and oot days when link really was a boy from Nowhere
but like i read a botw zelink fic a while ago where link was like “zelda i cant be the king, i can barely even read” and really i dont like the idea of any of the links being illiterate because theyre all pretty intelligent, i think (and like, are clearly able to read signs in towns and such in the games). but i think it makes no sense for botw link
like what makes you think that a boy born into a family of the royal guard (the most elite knights in hyrule), who grew up with the princess of the zora’s domain and spent time around hyrule castle would BARELY know how to read???? like… botw link was a High Society boy… i think it’s an interesting contrast to the rest of the links, for him to be the one who grew up closest to zelda’s status
i think the unsaid backstory at least for tp and oot link was that he was born to a family of knights too, but was abandoned or left behind for some reason. thats why he’s the only hylian in the kokiri forest and the only person in ordon with pointed ears
so yea it is interesting that even though in a lot of games he is implied to be of noble linage, botw is the first game where he is raised by his birth parents and he actually has a family history of fighters to look back on. maybe thats why he was already the greatest knight in hyrule at the same age where all the other links were just starting their adventures and holding a sword for the first time. he actually had a family this time instead of just being a kid living on his own
